What is Emotional Health

What is emotional health and what's the connection with our heart?

What is emotional health if not the ability to ride to the heights of our hearts in ecstasy and optimism, or to explore the depths of our heart through our connection to life and its deepest emotions.

Take a deep, slow breath and release it a couple of times. Relaxation breathing is a key component to stress reduction and improving our emotional health.

Emotionally healthy people have techniques and strategies to deal with the ups and downs of emotional living. You must pay attention to your own well-being and you must be resilient in the face of life's challenges. This will give you emotional health.

There is an emotional intelligence that we all have too. Emotional intelligence refers to our ability to know our own emotions and have awareness of the emotions of others.

Asking what is emotional health is asking about self-acceptance and self-knowledge. It's being calmer in the face of stress and having emotional self control.

To live life fully we all must experience the full range of emotions and be able to process them and release them.

Studies show that those people who have emotional maturity have stronger immune systems and are less susceptible to heart problems and other health issues.

If you want to know what is emotional health, it's important to know that all emotions exist for a reason.

Emotions can show up in any part of our bodies and we can learn to recognize the physical sensations associated with these emotions. Heart rhythm meditation is a great way of connecting with our emotional bodies. We do this through focus on the breath and heartbeat.

The Heart is the Center
of the Emotional Body

The heart is the center of our emotional body. In Heart Meditation we focus on our hearts and breathe through our hearts. This is called heart-focused breathing and it's being taught by Doctors, nurses, and clinics throughout the world. This type of breathing is energetically healing for our hearts.

Heart Resilience

In asking what is emotional health we must look at heart resilience which is the ability of the heart to handle the ups and downs of an emotional life.

Resilience is like a tree that bends in the wind but doesn't break. It can withstand the fluctuations of its environment by being flexible. The same can be said for our hearts.

Emotional resilience can be represented by the following two images which look at heart rhythms.

In the first image below we see the heart rhythms of a normal individual who is experiencing stress and frustration and who is breathing erratically or shallowly. Notice the spikes in the heart rhythms. These might have occurred when the subject was asked about something stressful like their finances, love life, job stress, etc. The heart responds by spiking up and/or down. This is stressful for the heart.

The next chart (below) shows the same person's heart rhythms while doing relaxation breathing or heart rhythm meditation. Notice that the heart rhythms are in a smooth wave pattern.

This shows a heart that has power and resilience. It is unaffected by the emotional changes in the way the first chart shows. The person is breathing slowly and deeply and rhythmically and this causes the heart's rhythms to become rhythmic, stable and resilient. The subject in the chart could be asked different stressful questions and could maintain steady heart rhythms at the same time.

This is the result of proper relaxation breathing or meditation practices as described on this site.

And so our emotional health is shown to be reflected in our heart rate variability.

Technology like the emWave and Wild Divine biofeedback products are based on heart rate variability technology. Simple breathing practices can be learned which give our heart rhythms and our emotions resilience and flexibility. This builds emotional health!
