There is a rhythm in life, both in the outer and inner world.
Rhythmic motion keeps the whole universe moving and the same motion is the hidden secret of our lives, as we are a miniature universe within ourselves. ~ Hazrat Inayat Khan
The planets revolve around the sun and the seasons change and night turns to day and youth turns old and time moves on. This is the rhythm of the earth, our home.
The rhythms within ourselves are our breath and our heartbeat. These are the two key rhythms which we are born with and which are with us our entire lives. So when we tune into these inner rhythms we can go deep into our inner kingdom.
Our breath is both cause and effect of rhythmic motion. Upon the moment of our birth we are given the gift of breath and our life begins in the outer world. If you watch a baby breathe you will see a full belly breath that is rhythmic and deep. This is our natural gift of breath which we can relearn in a new way now.
We tend to lose our great breathing ability with age because as we experience life, we sometimes have the breath taken out of us or we begin to breathe shallowly and irregularly. This kind of breathing is the result of stress and this erratic and unconscious breath will make our life erratic and unconscious. It affects the rhythm in life.
Inhaling and exhaling is just like the pendulum of the clock. When it is regular, the clock goes on regularly, when slow the clock goes slow, when quick the clock goes fast. So it is with us. When our breath is rhythmic, all things go well, the mechanixm of our body, the working of our mind, and the work of our feelings, all are normal.
When the rhythm of our breath is irregular, all illness comes, thoughts wander, feelings are upset, and our life becomes full of confusion. ~ H.I.K.
The other basic rhythm in the body is the heartbeat. The heart is formed at around day 25 for the unborn child. It starts beating before the brain is ever formed. It used to be thought that the brain was the only intelligence in the body but we now know that is not true.
The heart has an intelligence. There is a brain inside your heart. There is a field of science called Neuro-Cardiology now, which means the brain in your heart.
Your heartbeat is an amazing source of bio-feedback about your body, mind, and emotions.
When your heartbeat is regular and rhythmic, then your whole being feels balanced and good. When your heartbeat is irregular and erratic, then that’s how you feel. It’s a pretty simple relationship.
Some people have irregular heartbeats called arrhythmia, where the heartbeat is either too fast or too slow.
So how can you make your heartbeat regular and rhythmic?
- Breathe more slowly, and deeply, and rhythmically.
- Imagine the breath flowing in and out of your heart, in the middle of your chest.
- Think of something or someone you appreciate and hold that feeling of appreciation in your heart-space while you continue to breathe consciously.
Rhythm in Life
If you want to bring rhythm to your life, the best thing you can do is to start breathing rhythmically. Learn how to meditate with heart. Learn more about conscious breathing and mindfulness.
As you begin to develop your own meditation practice, you will become more masterful with your breath and a much more conscious breather. As you become a better breather, you will bring more balance and energy into your life.
Rhythm is the main thing to consider about the breath. Your whole being depends on the rhythm of your breath. If your heartbeat is irregular, the main problem is your breathing is NOT regular. So learn to breathe and you will help yourself immensely.
