Meditation Breathing Techniques Unlock Your Potential
The single most effective relaxation technique I know is conscious regulation of breath. Doctor Andrew Weil
Simple but powerful meditation breathing techniques are the key to your meditation practice. It is breath which creates the relaxation response in you. It is your breathing that affects your heart pulse rate, your heart rate variability, and your heart rhythms. How you breathe affects your heart rhythms which I will discuss in detail in another part of this site. Your heart rhythms affect your emotional state and your thoughts. Think about this... the thoughts you think are affected by your emotional state and your emotional state is affected by how you breathe. For example, if you are feeling stressed and you observe your breathing, you will see that you are breathing rapidly and shallowly. Breathing oxygenates every cell of your body. In Heart Rhythm meditation breathing, we use a full breath and make it rhythmic. You can try it now. Breathe slower, and deeper, and make your inhales and exhales about the same length. If you do that for just a minute you will immediately feel calmer and more in control of your emotions.
Breath is life and breathing is our most basic interaction with life. To the mystic the pattern of life is created by the pattern of breath. Therefore, we should try and breathe in a way that enhances our life. Slow and regular breathing is part of our heart rhythm practice. It is easy to do and I'll show you how to do it on this website. Breathing is something that can be done either consciously or unconsciously. Most people don't know how to breath consciously and take advantage of the nourishing heart-healthy properties of a full breath. Simple breathing techniques, once learned, can be used anytime and anywhere. Proper breathing techniques can calm your heart, lower your blood pressure, and help your digestive system without needing drugs. How you breathe has a direct connection to your emotions and moods. I'll demonstrate how this works with a bio-feedback device on another part of this site. You will see how your breathing affects your heart rhythms and you'll learn how your heart rhythms create what's called coherence. Coherence is a state of synchronization between your heart, brain and autonomic nervous system which is proven to have mental, emotional, physical and even spiritual benefits. You will be able to see what this looks like on a computer and you will feel it in your body during your meditation breathing practices. If I had to limit my advice on healthier living to just one tip, it would be simply to learn how to breathe correctly. Doctor Andrew Weil
