Heartmath Institute Stress Relief and Wellbeing
The HeartMath Institute has pioneered almost two decades of research into the heart intelligence, emotions, bio-feedback and stress management.
Their research has significantly advanced the understanding of heart-brain interactions, heart-rhythm-patterns and heart-rate-variability analysis, emotional physiology and the physiology of optimal learning and performance.
The emWave2 Personal Stress Reliever combines the handheld PSR with some of the emWave Desktop functionality. So you can take it on the go or connect it to your computer.
Dr. Oz called this the must have alternative health product (2011). I agree with him on this, having used the emWave for many years myself.
I learned how to use the emWave years ago through a meditation teacher that I had. I quickly learned how to create heart coherence and increase my Heart Rate Variability (HRV). These are two of the most heart-healthy practices anyone can learn!
I think that is the coolest thing. While I meditate, I usually feel good, and now, by using this bio-feedback device I can see what is actually happening WHILE I meditate.
Heart Rhythms Non-Coherent
Here you can see a graph of a typical heart rhythm. This is a measurement of your heartrate in beats-per-minute (bpm). The heart is always speeding up and slowing down. It doesn't just beat at a constant speed.
Notice the spikes up and down. Those represent stress. The heart reacts to stress by speeding up quickly. It's like the fight-or-flight syndrome. This is hard on the heart.
Coherent Heart Rhythms
Here is a graph of a coherent heart rhythm. Notice the smooth wave pattern. The heart rhythms are entrained with the breath rhythm. A smooth breathing pattern leads to a smooth heart rhythm pattern. This pattern is much easier on the heart. It shows cardiac coherence.
What's happening is that the heart rhythms are synchronized with my breath rhythms. A nice and rhythmic breath creates a nice and rhythmic heart rhythm as seen on the emWave graph. This is healthy for the heart.
Here's a video of me using the emWave Desktop and explaining what it means for my heart health and well-being! Very cool stuff and easy to use.
I have both the emWave Desktop for my computer and also the personal emWave hand held device. I love them both and use them regularly to check my own coherence levels (a similar feeling to relaxation and centering).
If I only did 5 minutes of heart coherence practices I would benefit. But by doing 20 minutes of meditation each day I go further along the path and into an expanded consciousness which is deeper and different than simple relaxation.
The Institute of Heartmath has created the Global Coherence Initiative as well which is a science-based initiative to unite millions of people in heart-focused care and intention and to shift global consciousness. It's an amazing concept that begins with each of us connecting with our own hearts.
The culture of the heart is emerging and HeartMath tools and training support us on this journey of the heart.
