Cardiac Coherence comes from the Heart

Cardiac Coherence or Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is one of the hottest areas of health and biofeedback research! Studies have found that a low Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is the single most important leading-indicator of heart disease.

This is easily done by simply breathing slowly and deeply and rhythmically. As you breathe imagine your breath is flowing in and out of your heart. As you do this simple relaxation breathing try to add a feeling of gratitude for somebody or something in your life. Hold onto that feeling of appreciation while doing heart-focused breathing. Do this for a few minutes or longer if you can.

Rhythmic breathing causes rhythmic heart rhythms. This is good for your heart! Heart rate slows, blood pressure goes down, emotions calm, and the mind slows.

Our Emotional State

The heart's rhythm, which is easily measured and graphed by biofeedback devices, is reflective of our emotional state. A chaotic pattern like the one below is oftentimes a reflection of emotional stress and shallow, irregular breathing.

Once one learns to breathe rhythmically and more slowly with a heart-focus, heart rhythms take on a smooth, wavelike pattern as shown below. This pattern reflects positive emotions like gratitude, calmness or optimism. This is called cardiac coherence.

Heart Rate Variability Coherence

All heart rate variability measures come from assessment of the naturally occurring changes in beat-to-beat heart rate. HRV reflects the complex interactions of the heart with multiple body systems. An optimal level of variability is important for flexibility and resilience , which is important to our well-being.

Low HRV is a predictor of health problems including mortality, and psychological issues.

So it is our breath and our heart, which play the central role in creating coherence and positive emotions.

Inner Guidance

Cardiac coherence is also important in connecting us with our inner guidance system or higher power. We might also call this heart intelligence.

We can practice shifting into a more coherent state at will. This can be practiced through simple breathing practices and can be measured by consumer biofeedback devices. Practicing more coherence will increase your intuitive awareness and shift your perception and even worldview, so that you make better, more intelligent decisions.
